Puerto Rico

Hey everyone ! Today we'll deal with another island, which is Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico, officially The Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, is a United States territory located at the northeastern Caribbean. In addition, Puerto Rico is composed of a a main island and a number of smaller islands. Puerto Rico is a Unincorporated territory of the United States , which means that the President is Barack Obama, and the current Governor is Alejandro Javier García Padilla. The official languages spoken there is Spanish and English, with Spanish as primary language. The Capital is San Juan, and currently 3,548,397 live in this island.

Right now we are going to focus on the culture of Puerto Rico. First of all we'll talk about Food. The national dish of Puerto Rico is Arroz con Gandules (Rice with Pigeon Peas). It’s a rice-and-pigeon-pea dish seasoned with sofrito and Pernil (Pork shoulder) diced smoked ham. There are other specialities from Puerto Rico such as Steak with onions, or roast suckling pig, a dish served on festive occasions. Moreover, Puerto Rico has its own locally producted food like peanuts, Ají Caballero (hottest Pepper from Puerto Rico) and guavas.

Let's now deal with Puerto Rican Music. Puerto Rico has several music genres. It can be bomba y plena, Aguinaldo, or more recently reggaeton. There is also classical music, there's even a festival, The Casals Festival, which takes place anually and attracts classical musicians from around the world. Concerning Opera, Puerto Rico is the birthplace to the legendary Antonio Paoli, who even performed private récitals to the Pope Pius X and the Czar of Russia Nicholas II. Moreover, Paoli was the first operatic artist in world history to record an entire opera in 1907. Many other famous artists come from Puerto Rico like Daddy Yankee, Marc Anthony, Tito Puente, and Omar Alfredo Rodríguez-López.

Concerning sports, One of the most popular sports in Puerto Rico is Baseball. There is the Puerto Rico Baseball League, which serves as the only active professional league, operating as a winter league. The Puerto Rico national team has participated in the World Cup of Baseball, and won one gold medal in 1951, four silver and four bronze medals. Puerto Rican players have their name at the Baseball Hall of Fame like Roberto Clemente (1973) and Roberto Alomar (2011).

Another popular sport here in Puerto Rico is boxing. Wilfredo Gómez Rivera and McWilliams Arroyo won their respective divisions at the World Amateur Boxing Championships. In the professional circuit, Puerto Rico has the third-most boxing world champions and it is the global leader in champions per capita. Some of these champions are Miguel Cotto and Félix Trinidad.

Basketball is also very popular. Indeed, The Puerto Rico Basketball Team joined the International Basketball Federation in 1957. Since then, it has won more than 30 medals in international competitions, including gold in three FIBA Americas Championships and the 1994 Goodwill Games.

Last but not least about sports, Soccer. The Puerto Rico Islanders Football club, founded in 2003, plays in the NASL which constitutes the second tier of football in North America.

 

About Literature, There are famous writer such as Alejandro Tapia y Rivera, known at the Father of Puerto Rican literature, one of his book is La antigua sirena (1862) . or Cayetano Coll y Toste, a writer and historian  who wrote His work The Indo-Antillano Vocabulary is valuable in understanding the way the Tainos lived. More recently, there are other Puerto Rican writes as Ed Vega, Piri Thomas, or Esmeralda Santiago.

St Vincent and the Grenadines

Hello everybody ! Haven't talked to you in days ! Today i'll talk to you about a beautiful island named St Vincent and the Grenadines (or just St Vincent). This island belongs to the Lesser Antilles. Indeed, it is located to the South of St Lucia, and to the west of Barbados. St Vincent took its independence from the British colony in 1979. Right now it is a  parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy with Queen Elizabeth II as Head of State. The Governor General, who represents The Queen, is currently Frederick Ballantyne. The Official language is English, and the local language is Vincentian Creole, spoken by almost everyboby in the population. The Capital of St Vincent is Kingstown, and approximately 120,000 inhabitants live there.

Now let's get into détails about St Vincent and the Grenadines Culture. For the moment we'll talk about Food. The national food there is Roasted Breadfruit and fried Jackfish. There are also specialities as billjau, a stew with salted fish, tomatoes, onions, coconut oil and hot peppers. , or madongo dumplings, a baked or fried specialty made with arrowroot flour, nutmeg and coconut. Some vegetables such as yams, potatoes, dasheen, tania, carrots, bananas and plantains, grow in St Vincent and The Grenadines.

We'll continue with Music. Several music genres exist in St Vincent like big drum, calypso, soca, or steelpan. Concerning artists, one of the most famous artists from St Vincent is Kevin Lyttle, known for his worldwide song Turn Me on. In 2013 he was named Cultural Ambassador for the Island. Each Year, St Vincent and the Grenadines has a festival named Breadfruit Festival. It's held at the month of August.  There are some activites like Local cultural activities. They include dancing, drumming, and performances by calypsonians among others.

 



 





We'll end up this article with Sports. The most popular sport in this island is Football. Indeed, St Vincent and the Grenadines has its own Football League, entitled the NLA Premier League, and also a national associal football team. There is a notable Vincentian player named Ezra Hendrickson who played at several Major League Soccer clubs in the United States, he is now a retired footballer and a coach at Seattle Sounders FC. Rugby is becoming very popular too, St Vincent and The Grenadines has its own national rugby union team, ranked 84th in the world.

Furthermore, netball is a major local sport and comprises women only.

 

 

 

In a nutshell St Vincent and The Grenadines is a great island, with lots of advantages. A good destination for vacations.

Haiti (English)

Hello everyone! We still deal with the Caribbean and this time we'll focus on the other part of Hispaniola which is Haiti. Haiti belongs to the Greater Antilles. Haiti is the first colonized country to take its independence from France in 1804. Haiti is currently a republic, with Michel Martely as Head of State. The Official Languages are Haitian Creole and French. The Capital of Haiti is Port-au-Prince. Currently 10,604,000 people live in Haiti.

 Right now let's talk about Haiti culture. As usual we'll start up with Food. The national dish in Haiti is Rice and Beans. In this dish they add herbs like garlic or thym to add flavours. Other typical dishes exist such as banane pesée, flattened plantain slices fried in cooking oïl; or Soup Joumon , a dish that all the haitians eat on their independence day, January 1st. Haiti has also some locally producted food as kidney, pinto, or oregano.

Then we'll continue with Music and Dance. Haiti has several music genres such as Compas, Méringue, Hip-Hop Kréyol, Twoubadou ballads or  Zouk. Concerning artists, Wyclef  Jean, a hip-hop artist, is from Haiti. About Dance, People attend parties at nightclubs called Discos and Bal. This term is the French word for ball, as in a formal dance.

We'll end up this article with Sports and Literature. In Haiti, the most popular sport is Football. Indeed, there are  hundreds of small football clubs competing at the local level. In 1974, the national team was the second Caribbean team to be qualified at the World Cup (after Cuba's entry in 1938) They lost in the opening. However, the team won the 2007 Caribbean Nations Cup. Haitian  soccer player Joe Gaetjens played for the USA national team in the 1950 FIFA World Cup, scoring the winning goal in the 1–0 upset of England.Basketball is also becoming very popular.  Haiti has also won medals in Olympic Games.

About Litterature, Haiti is the birthplace to Franketienne, great author, and the first to write a novel entirely in Haitian Creole, named Dezafi (1975). It describes a poetic picture of Haitian life.

République Dominicaine

Hey Tout le monde ! Aujourd'hui on va parler d'une partie de l'Hispaniola, il s'agit de la République Dominicaine. Cette île fait partie des Grandes Antilles. Cette île est une république depuis 1966, après la dictature de Trujillo (de 1930 à 1961) et l'opération menée par les Etats-Unis, afin d'éviter que le communisme se propage en République Dominicaine, et que celle-ci devienne comme Cuba. L'actuel président est Danilo Medina. La langue officielle est l'Espagnol, et l'île a pour dialecte l'espagnol dominicain. Le créole haïtien est également parlé par les descendants haïtiens. La capitale est Saint-Domingue et l'île compte 10, 792 millions d'habitants.

Maintenant nous allons parler de la culture de la République Dominicaine. Pour commencer, parlons de sa nourriture. Le plat national dominicain est La Bandera ( Le Drapeau en espagnol), composé de viandes (bœuf, poulet, porc ou poisson) du riz et des haricots rouges. Il existe d'autres plats typiques comme le Sancocho, un ragoût souvent préparé avec 7 variétés de viandes ou les Tostones, un plat de plantains fris. Beaucoup de plats sont fait également avec le sofrito, un mix d'herbes locales utilisés pour amener de la saveur.

Ensuite on va parler de la Musique et la Dance. La République Dominicaine est connue pour son genre musical rythmé qui est la merengue. Ce genre musical utilise pleins d'instruments comme la batterie, la basse, des instruments à cordes, et l'accordéon, mais également des instruments propres aux îles caribéennes hispanophones comme la tambora et la  güira. Il y a d'autres genres musicaux et danses comme la Bachata, le Palo, et la Salsa. Il y a  des artistes bien connus venant de la République Dominicaine comme   Wilfrido Vargas, Johnny Ventura et Fernando Vilalona.

 

 

On va finir cet article avec le sport. Le sport favori des dominicains est le Baseball. Après les Etats-Unis, la République Dominicaine possède le second plus grand nombre de au Major League Baseball (MLB).De plus, le premier joueur dominicain à avoir rejoint le MLB est Ozzie Virgil, Sr, le 23 septembre 1956.  Deux joueurs dominicains, Juan Marichal, et Pedro Martinez, sur dans le Baseball Hall of Fame. Il y a d'autres joueurs notables comme Rico Carty ou Albert Pujols.

Le second sport favori des dominicains, après le baseball, est le basketball. Quelques joueurs dominicains jouent ou ont joué dans la National Basketball Association (NBA), à l'image de Francisco Garcia ou Felipe Lopez. La République Dominicaine est aussi connue dans les jeux olympiques, à l'image du gagnant de la médaille d'or dans les Haies Félix Sanchez.

Hi everyone! Today I'll tell you some infos about Dominican Republic . Dominican Republic is an island that belongs to Hispaniola ( Island that has Dominican Republic and Haiti in it) , in the Greater Antilles, archipelago in the Caribbean region. The Dominican Republic is a Republic officialy  since 1966 after a period of dictatorship lead by Trujillo (from 1930 to 1961)  and the Operation Powerpack lead by the USA, to avoid communism. The current president is Danilo Medina. The Official Language is Spanish and the local dialet is Dominican Spanish. Haitian Creole is also spoken by the population of Haitian descent. The capital is Santo Domingo.  10.792 million people live in the Dominican Republic.

We'll now focus on Dominican Republic culture. First let's start with Food. The Dominican Republic national dish is La Bandera ("The Flag"; made of rice, red beans, and meat (beef, chicken, pork, or fish) Other typical dishes are : Sancocho,   a stew often made with seven varieties of meat or Tostones,  a fried plantain dish. Some dishes are made with sofrito,  which is a mix of local herbs used as a wet rub for meats and sautéed to bring out all of a dish's flavors.

There are other very popular genres such as Bachata, Palo and Salsa Music. Dominican Republic has well known artists like Wilfrido Vargas, Johnny Ventura and Fernando Vilalona.

Jamaïque

Bonjour à tous ! Aujourd'hui nous allons parler de la Jamaïque. Je vous parlerai d'une autre île tout à l'heure. La Jamaïque fait partie des Grandes Antilles. L'île est situé au nord, plus précisément à 145 kilomètres au sud de Cuba et à 191 kilomètres à l'est de l'Hispaniola ( Contenant les îles Haïti et la République Dominicaine) . La Jamaïque est indépendante  depuis 1962 et appartient au Commonwealth dont le chef d'état est la Reine Elizabeth II. La langue officielle est l'anglais et la Jamaïque a également une langue régionale, le patois jamaïcain. La capitale est Kingston. Avec une population de 2,8 millions d'habitants, la Jamaïque est le 3ème pays anglophone le plus peuplé d'Amérique  et la 4ème île la plus peuplée dans la caraïbe.

Maintenant entrons dans la vif du sujet, à savoir la culture. Comme d'habitude, on va commencer par la nourriture. Le plat national de la Jamaïque est l'ackee à la morue. Ce plat est  composé de morue émiettée, de légumes et d’un fruit rouge à la chair jaune, l’ackee. Il existe d'autres plat propres à la Jamaïque comme le Jerk Jamaïcain épicé, très connu, ou la soupe au pied de poulet. En effet, on utilise le pied de poulet, on y ajoute des carottes, des pommes de terre, de la citrouille, du cho-cho, de la patate douce, et un paquet de soupe en poudre mixé qui vient en différentes saveurs.

Dorénavant je vais vous parler de la musique. La Jamaïque est connue pour ses genres de musique comme le reggae, le ska, le mento, dub, et plus récemment le dancehall et le ragga. La Jamaïque a même joué un rôle dans la création du punk rock. L'artiste le plus connu de la Jamaïque est bien sur Bob Marley, sa musique est encore écouté même si il est mort depuis 34 ans. D'autres artistes bien connus viennent de la Jamaïque qui sont: Bennie Man, Shaggy, Sean Paul, ou encore le rapeur The Notorious B.I.G .

A présent on va se concentrer sur le sport et la littérature. Il y a beaucoup à dire sur le sport ! Mais pour ne pas rendre l'article trop long on ne va parler que de 3 sports à savoir l'athlétisme, le cricket et le football.

-Le cricket : La Jamaïque faisait partie des pays accueillant la coupe du monde de cricket en 2007. L'équipe nationale fait des compétitions dans le cadre de la région mais fourni également des joueurs pour les Antilles. Le cricketeur le plus renommé de la Jamaïque est Chris Gayle, et actuellement il joue pour l'équipe de cricket des Antilles.

 

-L'athlétisme : Usain Bolt, en tant que Champion du monde et qui tient le record du monde  en ce qui concerne la course pour le 100m à 9,58 s et au 200m à 19.19s est l'athlète jamaïcain le plus connu. Il y a d'autres jamaïcains célèbres comme le premier homme à avoir eu la médaille d'or aux jeux olympiques pour la Jamaïque et le précédent homme à avoir détenu le record du monde de 200 m Donald Querrie, ou encore Roy Anthony Brigde, qui fait partie du comité international olympique etc...

 

-Football : sport de plus en plus populaire en Jamaïque, L'équipe national s'est même qualifié pour la Coupe du Monde FIFA de 1998.

 

A propos de la littérature, la Jamaïque est beaucoup représentée dans les romans James Bonds de Ian Fleming, par exemple les romans Requins et Services secrets (1954), Rien que pour vos yeux (1960) ou encore L'Homme au pistolet d'or (1965). De plus, l'adaptation du livre de James Bond Docteur No a été filmé en Jamaïque. L'auteur et journaliste H.G de Lisser est jamaïcain. Il a utilisé son pays en tant que décor pour beaucoup de ses romans. Un de ses livres les plus célèbres est  The White Witch of Rosehall ( On peut traduire par La sorcière blance de RoseHall).

Hello everybody! We still deal with the Caribbean and today we'll focus on Jamaica. Jamaica belongs to the Greater Antilles. It is located at the north, and   lies about 145 kilometres (90 mi) South of Cuba and  191 kilometres (119 mi) west of Hispaniola (the island containing Haiti and Dominican Republic. Jamaica has becomed independent since 1962. It belongs to the Commonwealth with Queen Elizabeth II as Head of State. The official language is English, and as every island in the caribbean, Jamaica has a local language named Jamaican Patois. The capital is Kingston. With a population of  2,889,187 people, Jamaica is the 3rd most populous Anglophone country in America and the 4th most populous country in the Caribbean.

First of all, about Jamaica Culture, let's deal with Food.  Jamaica national food is Ackee and Saltfish. Ackee is a  nutritious fruit with a buttery-nutty flavor, ackee resembles scrambled egg when boiled. Jamaicans sauté the boiled ackee with saltfish (salt-cured cod), onions, and tomatoes. There are another known jamaican dishes as  the Jamaican jerk spice, that famous dish, or chicken foot soup, indeed,  The feet of the chicken are used to make soup. We use pumpkin, carrots, potatoes, cho-cho, yellow yam and a packet of soup powder mix that comes in different flavors.

Moreover we'll deal with Music. Jamaica is really known for its music genres such a reggae, ska, mento, dub, and more recently dancehall and ragga. Jamaica even played a role in the creation of punk rock. No need to tell you that the best known artist of Jamaica is Bob Marley, his music is still listened even through he has been dead for 34 years. Other well known artists from Jamaica are Bennie Man, Shaggy, Sean Paul and even The notorious B.I.G.

Furthermore we'll concentrate on Sports And Litterature. Concerning sports there are lots to say ! but to not make the article look too long we'll only talk about three important sports in Jamaica : Cricket, Athletics and Football :

 

- Cricket: The country was one the venues of 2007 Cricket World Cup. The Jamaican national cricket team competes regionally, but also provides players for the West Indies. The most renowned batsman from Jamaica is Chris Gayle and he currently represents the West Indies Cricket team.

 

- Athletics : Usain Bolt, as World Champion and  world record holder in the 100m for men at 9.58s, and 200m for men at 19.19s is the best known Jamaican athlete. There are Other famous jamaican  sprinters as the first Jamaican Olympic Gold Medalist and former 200m world record holder, Donald Querrie, or Roy Anthony Brigde, part of the International Olympic Committee, etc...

 

-Football : beecoming very popular in Jamaica, the national team even qualified for the 1998 FIFA World Cup.

 

About Literature, Jamaica many represented in Ian Fleming James Bond novels, for example Live and Let Die (1954), For your Eyes Only (1960)  and The Man With The Golden Gun (1965), Moreover, the James Bond film adaptation Doctor No have been set in Jamaica. Trinité-et-Tobago

Salut à tous ! Je vais vous parler d'une île que j'aime beaucoup, Trinité et Tobago. Trinité et Tobago est une île jumelle situé à coté de l'Amérique du Sud, c'est l'île la plus au sud des Caraïbes, elle est dans la côte nord-est de Venezuela. Depuis le 31 août 1962, Trinité et Tobago est devenue indépendante du Royaume-Uni et est depuis 1976 une république. L'actuel président est Anthony Carmona. La capitale de Trinité et Tobago est le  Port d'Espagne. La langue officielle est l'anglais, mais il existe également deux langues régionales : le créole trinidadien et le créole tobagonien, influencés par beaucoup d'origines comme le créole français (patois) pour le créole trinidadien. De puis 5% de la population parle espagnol, ce qui fait de celle-ci la première langue étrangère. 1, 223 916 personnes habitent cette île.

A présent parlons de la riche culture de cette île. Nous commencerons par sa nourriture. Le plat national de Trinité-et-Tobago est le Pelau,plat composé de riz, de poulet et de légumes cuisinés en pilaf, c’est-à-dire en absorbant un bouillon aux épices, et il est quelque fois assaisonné  de lait de coco. Mais il existe d'autres plats typiques de Trinidad et Tobago comme :

- Le Buljol : un plat de morue accompagné de piment, oignons, tomates, et d'huiles d'olives. Souvent servie avec du coco.

- Souse : c'est du pied de cochon bouilli et servi froid avec une sauce salé de citron, concombre, piment et oignons.

- Pastelle: des boulettes de pates de mais remplis de viandes cuisinés dans des feuilles de bananes. Il existe des variations végétariennes avec du soja et des lentilles.

De plus Trinité-et-Tobago possède des fruits locaux comme le fruit à pain, le mango ou encore le fruit de la passion.

Maintenant parlons de la musique. Les principaux genres musicaux sont la soca, le calypso, le steelpan, ou encore la Parang. En ce qui concerne les artistes, la plus connue est Nicki Minaj, née au Port d'Espagne. Edmundo Ros le " Roi de la musique latino-américaine" vient également de cette île. De plus Trinité-et-Tobago est connue pour son carnaval chaque année les lundis et mardi gras avant le Mercredi des Cendres.

Trinité et Tobago se distingue également dans les séries ou cinéma : trois des acteurs de la célèbre série de Will Smith Le Prince de Bel-Air viennent de Trinité-et-Tobago. Il s'agit de Tatyana Ali et Alfonso Ribiero jouant respectivement Ashley et Carlton, les cousins de Will, ainsi que Nia Long, qui jouait la petite amie de Will, Lisa.

Trinité et Tobago est le plus petit pays à avoir deux gagnantes du titre Miss Univers:

- Janelle Commissiong en 1977 et la première femme noire à avoir gagné

- Wendy Fitzwilliam en 1998

On finit cet article avec la partie Sports. Trinité et Tobago est bien connue au sein des jeux olympiques :

Course : Hasely Crawford a gagné la première médaille de Trinité et Tobago lors des jeux Olympiques de 1976. Richard Thompson est de Trinité et Tobago, il est arrivé en second juste après Usain Bolt lors des jeux Olympiques de Beijing au 100m avec un temps de 9,89 s.

Lancée de Javelot : Récemment Keshorn Walcott a gagné la médaille d'or lors du lancée de javelot en 2012.

Athlétisme : Ato Bolton est le champion en athlétisme le plus titré à Trinité et Tobago, en tout 8 médailles : 4 aux jeux Olympiques et 4 aux Championnats du Monde.

 

Le Cricket est un des sports les plus populaires à Trinité et Tobago. Comme la Barbade, Trinité et Tobago a accueilli la coupe du monde de cricket de 2007.  Le Batteur Brian Lara détient ou  a détenu  plusieurs records du monde à ce niveau.

 

Le football est aussi très populaire dans cette île. L'équipe nationale s'est qualifiée pour la première fois à la coupe du monde FIFA en 2006, devenant ainsi le plus petit pays (en termes de populations) à avoir réussi cela.
