Barbados

Hello everybody ! Today i'll talk to you about another beautiful island, Barbados.   Barbados is located at the east of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and at north-east of Trinidad & Tobago. Barbados belongs to the Lesser Antilles then. Since November, 30th 1966, Barbados has become an independent state and in the Commonwealth with Queen Elizabeth II as Head of State. Its capital is Bridgetown. Barbados  official language is English, but it has also a local language, Bajan, spoken by almost everybody in the population.  277,821 people live in Barbados.

Now that I said the main infos on Barbados, I'll tell you about its culture. First, as usual, we'll deal with the Food . Barbados national meal is Cou Cou and Flying Fish. Moreover in Barbados, there are popular meals as : PepperPot, a very spicy meal with pork in it, Fish Cakes, made of fish fried balls from herbs and cod fish, or Bajan Black Eye Peas  and Rice, the most common rice recipe in the island. Some vegetables grow locally in Barbados, like asparagus and okra.

I'm now going to talk to you about Music. The main music genres are Calypso, Reggae, Soca, Ska, Barbados even produced an indigenous style called Spouge. No need to tell you that the best known Barbados artist is Rihanna. There are also well known groups and artists as Shontelle, the band Cover Drive, or The Merrymen. Concerning events, each year there's a carnival-like Cultural event called the Crop Over Festival. In this festival, there are music competitions and other traditional activities. It goes from the begginning of July until the first Monday of August with the costumed parade on Kadooment Day.

Last but not least, we'll deal with Sports. In Barbados  there are lots of sports, such as :
 
- Cricket : The Country Hosted the final of the 2007 Cricket World Cup. Many great Cricketers as Sir Garfied Sobers, Sir Franck Worrell or Wes Hall are from Barbados.
 
-Sprint : Obadele Thompson is from Barbados. He won a bronze medal at the Olympic games of 2000 in the 100m sprint.
 
-Barbados also has its champions in Hurdles: Ryan Brathwaite reached the 2008 Olympics semi-finals in Beijing. The following year, he won Barbados first Gold medal at the world championships in Berlin, when he won the men's 110 meter hurdles title.
 
-Basketball : Very Popular sport playing at school and College.
 
- Tennis : Becoming very popular in Barbados, its highest player is Darian King. He is also the 2nd highest ranked player in the Caribbean.

We'll conclude this article by saying that Barbados is such an amazing island and there are lots of things to discover there.
